I'm glad this was short. Not only does it not have to include filler pages and plot points, but it is more precise with the meaning.

A horror story. That is usually not my genre, but like Miller’s other work, this story completely gripped me.
Though I know she wrote it before getting Long COVID, I couldn’t help but connect the rage and despair of Galatea begging the doctor to believe her with the millions having the same fight today.

Madeline Miller notes in the afterword that she's responding directly to Ovid's account of Pygmalion and Galatea from Metamorphoses and in 56 pages manages to write something so complete and completely devastating you'll think about it forever.

The audiobook was amazing. This short story was a lot darker than I expected. I thought that I was
familiar with the story of Pygmalion, but this book is making me realize that I have never thought about the story from Galatea's perspective. Madeline Miller's short story provides a more realistic version of Galatea's marriage to Pygmalian. Miller's writing in this short story was beautiful, and I thought the ending was perfect.

The Author's note at the end provided important information about the source of the story and the meaning of it. Don't miss it!!
