Really enjoyed this! Great perspective on a very scary time and place in history. Now, I've discovered Dan Carlin's Hardcore History podcast and my commutes have been consumed by that, so less reading going on at the moment..

Mr. Larson states from the start that he writes in this book without the influence of hindsight. This is for the best because it is honest and for the worst because it's agonizing. We know now what the events lead to but are helpless to change them. Erik Larson researched the period and communicates it to us in his amazing way. It left me sad that certain people sensed the future yet no one listened.

I won this as a First Reads giveaway. This is nonfiction told in a very readable format. I wasn't expecting to enjoy reading this since nonfiction works are sometimes rather boring. However, Erik Larson has done an excellent job telling about Hitler's rise to power, through the eyes of William Dodd a newly appointed American Ambassador to Germany and his family. A very interesting and readable work.
