Everything about this novel is beautiful and heartbreaking. You get to meet young Rufus and Mateo and their parents and see how they helped Valentino and Orions story move forward. Valentino literally gave his heart to Orion. Paz saved his mom. Frankie got what he deserved. It was heartbreaking, but beautiful.

This book is good. I absolutely loved “they both die at the end” and I just wasn’t in absolute love with this one. I think there was a ton of unnecessary repetition in details that could’ve been toned down. I also think that the characters were give so many flaws and imperfections in their lives that it’s hard to not make it seem like they are trying to one up each other with their life story. Now I do live the authors writing though. This series and author is definitely a go to for a good time not a literary masterpiece and tbh I love when books aren’t literary masterpieces.
Another thing the author has going for him is that he makes characters that you can’t help fall in love with and I love being able to connect to the characters.

I think the story itself was good for a prequel. I do think the sophistication of the writing could’ve spanned a little more eloquently during parts discussing the boys feelings. I think love can be done without the characters saying/implying they wanna do the nasty with each other every few chapters.

I think this book is important because it uncovers so many themes around death and dying and what it’s like to be gay in different situations and what that looks like for different people when death is in play. I also think that the 9/11 plot line fit in alright with the story and wasn’t just added for no reason which is good.

Overall good read and audio. I look forward to reading more from the author.
