Loved it - grossly over the top visceral horror! An absolute must for any horror fan.
Take no prisoners 80’s horror at its finest. The creature feature is alive and starving in Yarkie.
I liked it. At times it felt both pretentious (with having to constantly look up words only to realize it seemed to just be using "big words" because it could, not because it needed to. Like a "look what big word I know!" even though this is just a killer cockroach book...) and badly written. I mostly liked all the science but eventually it did feel a bit dry. The romance felt...weird too...and i'm not sure why it was there.
That stuff aside though I did like it for the most part. It's gross, has killer cockroaches. A fun horror story.

What could be better (and by better I obviously mean more revolting) than a story about mutated murder-cockroaches?
This story, although a bit dated, is actually quite a lot of gory, squicky fun.

This was a goofy and fun read. What could be better than mutant cockroaches that eat people's eyes?!
The Nest has everything you could want in a vintage horror novel.
On the surface the story is about killer cockroaches, but it also features a nice examination of small-town life and relationships. The prose is surprisingly eloquent, which is strange for a story about mutant roaches. But that added very much to the whole experience. It was almost comical reading these poetic passages describing some seriously gruesome and horrific scenes.
Oh, and a few guys get their dicks chewed off (yes, a few, as in multiple). But the cockroaches don't stop there. They aren't picky eaters. No one...man, woman, or child...is safe from their ravenous appetite and their newly-acquired lust for blood!
If you can handle reading about bugs crawling over, burrowing into, and eating animals and human beings, then you should consider reading this book. If bugs freak you out, then perhaps you shouldn't pick it up. I can't even accurately convey how much I enjoyed this read.
4.5 stars rounded down. This was one of my favorite reads of the year! It only lost half a star because some sections really dragged due to scientific dialogue that didn't need to be included. Otherwise, this was beyond fantastic and immensely entertaining.

Favorite book I've read this year. Utterly shameless filth.
I'm confused because the foreword (and other reviews on here) complain that it seems padded out with too much Science-y talk. Didn't seem like that to me, but I read the Valancourt edition (292 pages vs the 448 page Zebra original). So... is the Valancourt edition abridged? Or just smaller type?
