I read this every holiday season. It never disappoints.
“HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.”
Semi-annual Hogswatch reread. Always clever, always profound, always a pure pleasure. Top three discworld novels for me for sure.

I liked it but it feels wrong to be reading a Christmas book in May.
Hogfather, aka Death Takes A Holiday, is a pretty good Discworld novel. Recommended.
As soon as I realized that the book was just about identical to the made for tv movie I stopped reading. There may be differences later on, but I didn't really want to do the reading necessary to find out.
While I don't regret reading it and the book did have some of Pratchett's signature humor and wisdom, I didn't enjoy the story as much as I hoped to. It seemed too long and meandering, and stuffed to the gills with quips that didn't need to be there.
I love the Death series, and I believe this is the first book to introduce the Auditors, who are the only force in the Discworld universe (multiverse?) that pose a serious problem for Death.
Reading this one for a bit of Hogswatch (Discworld's equivalent of Christmas) spirit!
Truth to be told, I didn't entirely understand what is going on (a reread soon will be needed) but that's part of the charm of reading books by [a:Terry Pratchett|1654|Terry Pratchett|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1235562205p2/1654.jpg] -- you go along with the flow and have fun with the characters, the actual plot and subtext can wait until the reread. I love meeting Susan the first time and she doesn't disappoint -- I'd love to read about her adventures before this. The wizards are hilarious and Mr Teatime (pronounced Teh-ah-tim-eh, everyone gets it wrong) was honestly a scary but compelling villain -- what's more fascinating and memorable than an Assassin who 'look'd like the innocent flower'? And the best of all... Death! I've only read [b:Mort|386372|Mort (Discworld, #4; Death, #1)|Terry Pratchett|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388181166l/386372._SY75_.jpg|1857065], so it's such a nice surprise seeing him getting fascinated with humanity, and demanding fairness (what a change from THERE'S NO JUSTICE. THERE'S JUST ME), giving gifts to kids as the Hogfather HO HO HO. And Albert being the Hogfather's little helper...!
Overall, a fun read, but after 3 Terry Pratchett books in the last two weeks, I think I'll take a little break from Discworld (it feels like doing a brain workout when I read it -- I like it when you have to pay attention and work for it to understand some of the humour, but I'd read some other books this holiday before reading another Discworld one!)
