By Cyper the Mountain Giant, the Beast Quest series has developed a strict formula (though the first book varied slightly).

Step One: During the prologue, a handful of brand-new characters are attacked by a Beast and narrowly survive.

Step Two: Elenna and Tom reach the approximate area of the next Beast. Conveniently, they run into the survivors, who explain the hardships of the area and their encounter with the Beast.

Step Three: Elenna and Tom start to turn around the lives of the unlucky locals, usually including the prologue's survivors; they'll likely have to deal with a quick crisis or two before they can set out to complete their main task. Why Elenna and Tom are the most competent two individuals in all of Avantia in spite of their pre-pubescent age, I couldn't tell you.

Step Four: Elenna and Tom go to fight the Beast. Tom tends to do all of the work; Elenna either helps or is busy playing damsel in distress (and I really hope to see her get out of that rut in one of the upcoming books).

Step Five: The Beast, now freed, gives Tom's shield a blessing of some kind, and the wizard Aduro shows up for pointless congratulations. The end.

All in all, if you're looking for a series of short, formulaic fantasy novels to help ease a young child into the genre, the Beast Quest series isn't a bad place to start. I can't say I highly recommend it, but it should at least be entertaining to the target audience (RL3, around ages 5-8).

For more reviews, check out my blog: Craft-CycleThe more of these books I read, the more I wish they were a little more creative. Each one pretty much follows the same story arch, which is rather predictable. However, I could see them being very popular with young readers, especially those who are a bit reluctant about reading in general. The similarities between this series andEmily Rodda's Deltora Quest series grows with each book, but I find these much more straightforward and slightly repetitive. I am blown away by the fact there are over 80 books in the larger series, but again, I guess I can see young readers really binging on these. The adventure and plot in this book were still interesting, but after the first two books, this one is pretty predictable. Quick, simple read that is entertaining, albeit very similar to the first two books in the series. I found books 1-4 in the clearance bin so I will read the next book, but so far I'm not enthralled with the series enough to continue passed that.

Third entry in the Beast Quest series sees another successful beast freed from its trap, no spoiler there really did you expect anything else? Team Glade continues its theme in generic story with some entertainment although surely there will be some differences soon, as this same plot line can't be repeated one hundred times can it? Then again....

Read the Swedish Edition of the book.

My seven year old thought it ought to be rated 4,5 star (and the half star was because he did not like that the prologue and the first chapter of the next book was in it).

As an adult I thought it at times to boring and with strange choices of which details to describe. Ok as a childs book but gave nothing to me

Probably the least favourite so far as it felt rushed. My son didnt enjoy it as much and the climax wasn't as exciting as the other books.
