This series is astonishing and is so deeply different and more disturbingly realistic than any other book I’ve ever read. Not realistic in that I relate to all the evil, but realistic in how each moment is described, how emotions and decisions flow into one another, how motivation is constructed within each person’s mind, and how life flows from dullness to shock and back and forth. i feel crazy

This is probably my least favorite of the Neapolitan novels, but was still phenomenal! Elena is such a complex and fleshed out character, and I will be sad to see her and Lila go in the final installment!

I think this series gets progressively better as it goes on!  Maybe I just know the huge cast of characters better now and am invested in the adult Lenu more as a supremely flawed and unreliable narrator, but I liked this book better than the two that came before it.  That makes me want to pick up the last one really soon!

God, this one was stressful! I loved the tangents into Lila's life at the sausage factory and with Enzo, and how that contrasted with Elena's life in more wealthy, intellectual circles writing about things Lila was actually experiencing. All the shit with Nino and Pietro was incredibly frustrating, but I still liked Elena struggling with her feelings and what to do with herself. This was potentially my least favorite of the Neopolitan novels, but even that's not saying much, since it was still perfectly written and a beautiful read.
