¡Wuola, wuola!

Token and stereotyped characters, pancake-flavored vaping, and a manipulative female villain who gets her kicks from playing guys against each other. Switch the vape pen with a cigarette and this could have been written in 1960. Why remake it if you're not going to dig a little deeper than problematic tropes?

A good set up but moved too quickly for me to feel for anyone. My library doesn't have book 2 so I might not continue unless we get it.

Fun, if really loosely plotted AU Batman story; the best part was the unexpected diversity of the cast.

Check out my review at Forever Young Adult.

It's been awhile since I read anything new that included Bruce Wayne and those surrounding him. I'm glad to see this written as a young adult novel, definitely different than what is known of his character, but still including his brooding nature and mysterious persona. I will say though, I didn't know what to expect when it came to his character here. But, glad to say, he does grow depth as the story progresses.

Plus, the illustrations in here were really well done, catching the different scenes perfectly. The color schemes of it were all shades of bright and dark, making it a great combo. Especially, that cover. It caught my full attention the minute I saw it. That gives the reader an idea of what can be found in this volume. It really helped bring many of the characters to life, which I needed after a bit of Selina's personality.

The other characters took me a bit to get accustomed to, as Selina doesn't necessarily make liking her easy, but as the story continued and we got to know her more, she did begin to grow on me. It wasn't as much as I would have liked, since she is one of the main characters, but it was enough to want to know where the story is going to lead her in the next volume.

One character I will say I enjoyed reading about and getting to know, is Jack. He's someone that kept growing throughout all of the novel, and became a quick favorite. I feel for the guy, as his heart kept getting messed with and trampled on. Hopefully, we get to see him have a bit of a happier outcome in the next volume, because I'm absolutely looking forward to it.

These novel also has plenty of diversity, and more characters the reader gets to see in a different light, with opportunity for more story lines to immerse. It's all of that which kept me reading and wanting to know more of what's to come. Like, mentioned above, there were some character moments that fell flat for me, but it wasn't enough to take away from everything else in here.

***I received this copy from DC Comics, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.***

An interesting interpretation of the Batman stories, remixed to have all the main heroes and villains as high schoolers. The story focuses on Bruce and Selina and Jack, with cameos by Poison Ivy, Harvey Dent, and Dick Grayson. It’s a world of privilege and class conflict, with struggles for money, security, and power.
I thought the art was really good. It’s nice to have a full color graphic novel and seeing Bruce Wayne as a broody teen was fun considering the role he normally plays. Grayson is a peer in age, though it is not clear if the story will be continued. There is less vigilante business, more smarts than masks to fuel the heroism, but the story centered on a childhood friendship turned romance turned suspicion was interesting.
Overall, an interesting addition to this universe but nothing revolutionary in storytelling.
