Rilla of Ingleside

L.M. Montgomery

4.17 AVERAGE

I love the L.M. Montgomery and I think this is one of her best works that is not as well known. The outbreak of World War I and how it affects Anne's family is enthralling. This book really made me understand the "loss of innocence" that the WWI generation went through. I absolutely love this book and read it repeatedly!

Surprisingly, one of my favorites in the series! It’s definitely a different tone, now that WWI has started. There’s this beautifully painful coming of age for Rilla that I LOVED. And the all of the characters’ spirit and determination in the face of immense change and suffering was encouraging to read (esp. in 2020).

OKAY SO I HAVE FINISHED THE SERIES. This was not my most favorite ONLY because oh my god so much war so much war so much WAR AND POLITICS. SWATHS of pages where it's JUST ABOUT WAR. WE GET IT, L.M. WE GET IT.

but the moments and the characters were MARVELOUS. Like, okay, sure, yes, HAVE 14 YEAR OLD RILLA TAKE SOLE CARE OF A NEWBORN without blinking an eye. I love it?? she brought him home in a soup tureen?? and, like. JUST took care of him forever. (Did Rilla stop going to school in this? Did they HAVE past age 14?) It was weird but GOOD? And the spinster schoolteacher (right?) Miss Oliver who just...lived with the Blythes indefinitely? Okay??

But just. I loved how Rilla grew as a person. I love how she grimly taught herself to take care of the baby. I love her relationship with Walter (...Walter. ;______;) and I found her falling in love with Ken and then not having ANY CONTACT WITH HIM for four years endearing? Really?

And Dog Monday. DOG MONDAY WAITING FOR JEM FOR FOUR YEARS. FOUR. YEARS. WE DON'T DESERVE DOGS. I was telling my wife about the Dog Monday storyline and WEEPING AS I DID SO. my heart. MY HEART. Tears were literally running down my face at the end.

And the last word of the book - the last work of the series. L.M. Montgomery is HILARIOUS and I LOVE her.

Re-read 2009, 2016

The sad conclusion to Anne's story - BUT I recently found out there is another book! Hoping that it is better than some of the other late sequels (I'm looking at you, Sweet Valley High).

Thus ends my two-year reread of the entire Anne of Green Gables series. I’m sure I’ll be back in a couple years.

can confirm: still makes me cry like a baby.
