A really good read for pandemic times. Puts a lot in perspective, since the characters are going through WWI and experiencing the depths of despair related to the war. But it also provides gorgeous descriptions of the landscape that one can savor. It’s both escapist and not at the same time.
This book was just as good as the first time I read it. I love learning about how the women coped with WWI at home, and reading it from a teenage girl's perspective made it even more interesting. Such an emotional, moving book. Little Dog Monday makes me cry every time ...
Update March 2024: 3.5 stars. I didn’t like this one quite as much as the other times I read it, and I think that’s because I have been tired of WWII (and I guess WWI) stories for a while. I found that Susan had a lot (too much?) to say in this book, which I hadn’t remembered. It dragged a bit. But Dog Monday still gets me every time!

There is no one quite like Dog Monday or Susan... they are fabulous.
After reading Rainbow Valley (and being disappointed by how little Anne or her family appears), I really enjoyed Rilla of Ingleside. While Anne of Green Gables is really lighthearted, Rilla of Ingleside is much darker. This last book follows Anne's youngest daughter during World War I. I got really emotional reading this book, but it was a good end to the series.

I HATED Rilla as a teen reading this; but I loved reading about how Rilla matured throughout the book. It was heartbreaker. It was a tear jerker.

So sad to have finished this series! It was a deeper read than the others have been, but what a lovely ride! I loved Rilla’s character arc, and I loved her little relationship with Kenneth. Very fun to hear how all of the characters had been faring.
I never was able to read this series as a kid, it just never crossed my paths. This was a wonderful series, reminiscent of The Little House on the Prairie but another time and another place.
