This book is so different from the rest of the series that it doesn't even seem to be part of it--where the other books balance their darkness with funny anecdotes and wild characters, even the anecdotes in this one seem bittersweet and barely bring any levity to the story. I loved how characters who were developed over the last few books grew into adults and became fully rounded and lovable adults, and for the first time it almost felt right that Anne took a backseat in this book and her children came to the forefront.
I'm really sad that this series is ending (I don't think I'll read the short stories), but I think I'll remember this one for a long time. Maybe I'll re-read them all in a year or two, or at least my favorites.

Rilla is a heroine in her own right, not dependent on her mother's Green Gables legacy; yet, this final shift in focus could be off-putting for devoted friends of the Anne-girl.

This has all the charm and nostalgia I enjoy in the Anne of Green Gables books with the added bonus of viewing the lives of the women during WWI.
One of my favourites of the series. It's told from the perspective of Rilla, Anne's youngest, and covers a period from just before WW1 (when she's a bright eyed 15 year old with a head filled with romance and parties) to the end of the war four years later. During this period, life does not quite work out as the young Rilla imagined, and we follow her growth as a human and woman during the happy and sad events that follow. Although Canada was never bombed or invaded, the families who stayed behind were still impacted by what was happening in the rest of the world, and I found it interesting to read about it. Dog Monday also made me cry!

- I can't believe Anne's kids are all grown up. This series spans most of Anne's life.
- Rilla is so endearing. She is my favorite of all of Anne's kids. She reminds me a lot of Anne.
- Besides the first couple of books, this one is a favorite. The middle books are pretty slow, but this last one is great! It reminds me a lot of Anne of Green Gables. There was a bit a romance, a few shenanigans, and lots of heart.
- I love their cat, and I love that they call him Dr. Jekyll/Mr Hyde depending on his mood. Ha!
- Besides Rilla, Susan really steals the show in this story. Her opinions and events cracked me up.
- Dog Monday also stole the show. I love stories about devoted dogs. It just tugs at my heartstrings.
- I really liked that this story took place during The Great War. It was interesting to read about Rilla and everyone's life during the war. It was so hard on everyone. I can't imagine sending my kids or my brothers off to war.
- This book was the perfect ending to the series.
