3.5 ⭐️ absolutely heartbreaking!
I’m happy to see so much of Anne in the first book in her daughter Rilla!

After the last few lackluster books in this series, I really enjoyed thi s book. It had some of the old mishaps of Anne’s earliest adventures, but it was also dealing with the much darker subject of world war i in the background. I do wish that the characters were more developed and the book wasn’t told in summary so much, but on the whole this ws a vast improvement over the last few books.
This was my favorite of the Anne of Green Gables series. Rilla’s character evolves so much in this story. The strain and tension of the war adds a level of complexity to storyline that is heartbreaking and also beautifully felt by the characters. Oh Rilla, my Rilla…

It's been so many years since the first time I read this book, and I'm still not over how perfect the ending is.

I have never felt so much while reading a book. My heart was dashed against the rocks at Rilla and Anne’s trials, my soul wrung out by their grief, yet it meant my spirit could soar in the light of their victories. I sat out in the summer air beneath a dazzlingly pink sunset and let myself cry as I saw poor Rilla through her biggest trial, one which should have destroyed her, yet made her so strong.
L. M. Montgomery has a delicious was of bringing the past and future into the present, not feeling limited by telling the story in a strictly linear fashion but giving us glimpses of the things to come and that which will never be again, making scenes all the more poignant and powerful. This book is still remarkably hilarious in spite of the heavy subject matter, and dear Lucy Maud presents the coming-of-age story in a uniquely beautiful manner.
