This is the final full-length novel following the story of Anne (of Green Gables fame) and latterly, her children. I have followed a pattern with the Green Gables series in which I swear that the next book can never live up to the former, the next book must surely be the start of the decline in which the author starts writing flimsy cash-ins. Why would I want to read about grown-up Anne? Why would I want to read about Anne’s boring children? Etc etc. And then each book totally and completely steals my heart. I mean, in how many series is Book 8 not only of the same quality as the original, but also, in adding new layers to beloved characters, possibly the most moving and thoughtful of all?

"I wonder," said Miss Oliver, "if humanity will be any happier because of aeroplanes. It seems to me that the sum of human happiness remains much the same from age to age, no matter how it may vary in distribution.”
Rilla of Ingleside, L.M. Montgomery, 1921

This book is so incredibly beautiful, poetic and heartbreaking. I adore it

God - I just love this book so much. And now as an adult I've learned how groundbreaking the book was (one of the only books written by a woman as she was living through World War I, that focuses on Canada's importance in the war efforts) which makes it all the more amazing. Such a fitting end to the series in my opinion even if it is completely different in tone and style then any of the other books in the series.

I'm so glad to be done-the book made me sad, it had absolutely nothing going for it-and my beloved Anne was simply Mrs. Blythe. Ugh. If I ever re-read this series again, I'll stick only to the first 2 or 3 books-the rest aren't worth my time.

I don't recommend this book unless you're committed to finishing the series.
