Okay, this is a 3.5 for me. About 1/2 way through this book, I would've given this a solid 2 stars and was ready to quit. I still think you could have cut out about 50 pages and I probably wouldn't have gotten so bored.
Although the pacing was a bit off, I truly enjoyed this book. I love homages to the Golden Age of Detective Fiction because that's my jam. I wish there had been a cool hip girl detective (for grown ups, no shade to my girl Nancy Drew who started it all) in the Golden Age repertoire. I loved the little outtakes from the "original" Dahlia Lively books at the start of each chapter. I loved the idea of three women who've all played this heroine. I liked the setting and the family drama too. Honestly, the reveal at the end was very well done and the last fifty pages have me thinking I'll probably be getting the next book in this series--even if it's just from the library. A good read for people who love mysteries!

I was pleasantly surprised by 'The Three Dahlias', which took some time to come into its own. A slow start and a slightly odd shift in perspective meant it took me a beat just to get into it - but when it got going, it really got going. Well paced and thoughtfully plotted (I didn't guess who the murderer was, I had an inkling, but never a full discussion) and plenty of strong red herrings made this a great mystery. The setting, I felt, could have been developed a bit more but Watson's writing was not for the lyrical - it was straightforward and suitably tense when it needed to be.
If it hasn't already been optioned, I think this would make a fantastic TV show - not just because it's returnable, but with such an expansive cast of characters and a Christie-style writer at its heart, it's the kind of genre the BBC adores adapting. Plus, three women as the lead? Sign me up.

A lovely homage to (golden age) crime stories, fans of the mystery genre, and female friendship.
i thought that this was super fun and i'm definitely looking forward to the second book
A decent whodunnit. Very Christie-esque. A very enjoyable read
