4.5?

When I was a child I won second place in a little local short story contest for my little mystery The Case of the Lop-Sided Dog. This book was what I imagine it might’ve become if it was expanded and matured.

This was a satisfying read. I loved the ties to the Habsburgs and gemology and international travel and the fact that it was part mystery and a small part romance (though the Millers seem to choose partners poorly) and part family drama. The weakest character/least believable story line was the one that ended up least resolved but it was all ok in the end.

This was a great way to end my 2020 reading.

This book surprised me!

I ended up enjoying this book much more than I thought I would. I read Amy Meyerson's first book, [b:The Bookshop of Yesterdays|36477572|The Bookshop of Yesterdays|Amy Meyerson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1525467985l/36477572._SY75_.jpg|58187593], and while I liked that one as well, I remember that the chapters were long. I know it's an odd thing to make note of, but I felt like I made progress slowly because when I would sit down to read, I'd read one chapter at a time because of how long they were. Odd as it is, the long chapters deterred me from picking up The Imperfects until just recently and boy am I glad that I finally did.

I found that the chapters were still long in this book, but they had the opposite effect on me; I didn't want the chapter to end because of how much I was enjoying the journey. Chapter length aside, this was a great story. I loved that there was a true historical aspect to it with the missing Florentine Diamond and how it supported the general story of a dysfunctional family trying to repair their relationship. At times, did every member of the family annoy me? Yes. However, was I also rooting for each of them? Absolutely. The ending was something I definitely did not see coming but it wasn't a disappointment.

This book was such a pleasant surprise and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good but unique family drama.

This book was just what I needed to hold my attention right now. This read was equal parts family drama and historical fiction, which was a pleasant surprise to me. When a distressed family comes across an unexpected gem in their inheritance, they are led down a path of discovery, exposed secrets, and necessary growth.

The characters were well developed and I loved seeing how they brought their own perception to the unfolding story. I especially loved the ending of this book...while it wasn’t predictable, it ended in a very satisfying way.

Thank you to Harlequin, Park Row, and NetGalley for an advanced copy.

I like the premise of this story - the hidden jewels used to escape WW2 and the disgruntled family reunited to find the story behind it. Instead it’s a bunch of unlikeable people who are too wrapped up in their own self interests to come together as a family. They are just as dysfunctional at the end as the beginning, if not more so.
The jewel discovery and research was the only good part of the story for me.

I liked the premise of the book, It was mildly entertaining but the characters were painfully one dimensional and corny. I liked the mystery but the rest(the main plot of the book) left much to be desired.
Edit:Fuck Victor and Deborah

might come back
