Intensely detailed and surprisingly sentimental seafaring madness. This story seems like it's pondering philosophical questions at some points and then throws in something about a guy fighting a shark to jump scare you. While the pacing is quite slow, I did enjoy how every once and a while the story throws a scene that'll give you whiplash to make sure you're awake. I really dislike the way in which Humphrey talks about Maud and think her character would be so much more interesting if turn of the century sexism wasn't put in there. But, I think Humphrey's attraction to her being a lot more wholesome (sort of) and sentimental and being in stark contrast to the intense physical descriptions he gives of Wolf Larson is interesting. The last part of it with the strange romantic subplot did feel tacked on and drawn out a little too long, though.

I don't enjoy this AcaDeca selection as much as I did Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle, but I think I like it more than Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead or Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (I love Mary Shelley, I just didn't enjoy Frankenstein

What a book. What a classic romance of the sea, captured beautifully, with everything: challenging characters, philosophy, danger, love, and heroism.

This book was densely packed with action and intensely descriptive. I could only take it in small doses. The adventure was so epic, it felt like it was 600 pages, though it was just shy of half that length. I hated it at first but honestly loved it by the end. It was the salty sea journey I didn’t know I needed. Pretty sure this has been on my shelf of to-read books for like 10 years, so good job me on finally reading it.
Also, you cannot change my mind that Wolf Larsen and Humphrey Van Weyden have some intense homoerotic tension between the two of them for half the book. They spend their time having lovers quarrels, talking about philosophy all night long, Wolf Larsen chokes Hump out at least once, and Hump spends many pages admiring Wolf Larsen’s powerful lithe body (and he is not shy to tell WL what a fine specimen of a man he is). Hmmmm……
