Idk, I really liked what this book was trying to do, and I didn’t dislike it, but with as many people running around as there were, I would have loved for the author to give themself more time to develop them. I did really like the main character and themes though!

I really enjoyed this story of Zhu Chongba's rise to greatness. Knowing nothing about 14th century China, I found the political intrigue fascinating and I loved the inclusion of sexual identity and queerness. I would have liked a little more world building and higher-stake situations for the main character. I also got bogged down in keeping the numerous characters straight. Looking forward to the sequel tho!

This book was amazing! The characters were well-developed, angsty, and play off each other really well. The world is very fleshed out and incorporates just a touch of magic. The book explores themes of survival, fate, love, and suffering. The audiobook narrator is great and really adds to the experience. Highly recommend!

The way the author describes the characters makes you root for everyone, even if one is supposedly supposed to come out on top. I love the queer representation and relate to Zhu in many ways
