Another breathtaking adventure set in Jamaica. This is the movie that had Ursula Andress in That Bikini... but the book is just as exciting.

Not bad. The pacing is off, as the book starts strongly but slows down considerably once Bond and Honeychile Rider are captured by Dr. No, which is when I expected everything to pick up speed to the end. Dr. No is a creepy villain with an intriguing backstory, but disappointingly dull in his interactions with Bond as he has a habit of being overly blabby. Bond has memorable encounters with two creatures here: first a tense overnight visit by a centipede and later an exciting fight with a giant squid that he awesomely defeats by using improvised and stolen items made into weapons. I certainly didn't predict that guano would feature so largely into the book's overall plot, which is an odd choice of Fleming's that isn't featured in the film adaptation.

It's James Bond. Our world view is somewhat different today (notice the euphemism), but that hopefully doesn't mean we are no longer allowed to enjoy the story.

A light, fast and entertaining read. I last read the Bond books 30-odd years ago and I was worried that they wouldn't have held up well. I needn't have worried. Fleming knows how to keep your attention - there isn't a slow passage in the whole book.
And the writing is slightly 'deeper'than I'd remembered. The book isn't overwritten but it's not overly-simplistic, either.
On to the next one. Thunderball, I think.

This was pretty much what I expected and I loved it. I started my journey into Ian Flemings James Bond books with this one as it is the first movie adaptation.
I enjoy the antiquity of the language and how you can definitely tell the pc rules that keep certain language off limits was totally acceptable when Fleming was writing.
Bond is a bad ass. I do hope he is more bad ass in the other books though. This one seems like he just barely slipped by. Excited to see the movie and make comparisons. it's been a long time since I have seen the films so should be great times!
From Russia with Love is the next book to movie so I picked that up and look forward to letting you know about it.
