Despite my lackluster feelings about the first book, I was lured into giving the series another chance. I loved the idea of a middle aged BnB owner in rural France solving mysteries… even if I had immediately forgotten all the plot points and everything that had happened in the first installment. I wanted a cozy read so I came back for the vibes. I was also fascinated by the restaurant angle & was hoping for some immersion into good French food!!
But alas… it is much of the same. Murder mysteries are both compelling and comforting to me because they invoke a feeling of injustice at a life cut short and a methodical determination to bring the truth to light. Logic and emotion working in tandem. Heart is largely missing from the Follet Valley mysteries. Valerie only wants the voyeuristic thrill of being involved in an investigation and Richard is so passive he’s barely alive.
But perhaps that’s the point and the author is going for the absurdity. There were definitely some delightful turns of phrases that had me laughing out loud. The homicide in this series is really just a comedic plot device. It removes the element of desperation or depravity that it takes for someone to be driven to murder... but this could just be a case of “it ain’t that kind of movie, kid.”

Ian Moore writes hilarious prose, and this was a highly enjoyable sequel to 'Death and Croissants' bringing back all my favourite characters, developing the romantic tension, and the taboo humour. However, with this story I was certainly more interested in the character relationships and less so in the mystery, causing me to zone out during chapters about the case. Similarly, there were too many characters involved in the murder for it to be a light-hearted read; it certainly requires a little concentration. The ending felt a little sudden too, meaning this was a little disappointing and inconclusive, perhaps there will be a third story? I am not sure I would read it, but that doesn't disregard the comedy and characters which made the story fun.
