I found this instalment a little more complex and difficult to follow than Red Rising - a little too much detailed world-building and in-world slang/terminology for my personal liking (though this might appeal to many). I also found the book seemed to use the same plot twist over and over again throughout which started to make it predictable. However, the pacing was good and I liked the relationship-building between the characters and the character growth.

To say that I am as undone as Darrow at the end of this book is an understatement. Again, I had a feeling I knew what was to come and STILL I was shocked even as it happened exactly as I thought it would.

There was so much treachery in this book. Despite not being in a hunger games situation, it still had plenty of action. We finally find out who Ares is! The revolution is in full swing and I’m apprehensive of where it will go from here because that ending was a dozy.

Considering how well beloved this series is, I gave the second book a chance and was positively surprised with what I found. Gone is the limitation of a competition based education setting and instead we are taking into the vaster realms of interplanetary politics and the fighting for power by the various factions involved.

Thankfully the storyline of the fridged wife of Darrow is downturned and switched into something more believable.

The story takes twists and turns, some are expected, others come rather as complete surprise.

Tim Gerard Reynolds is an amazing narrator.

This definitely surpass the Red Rising, there were so many tense moments and pure entertainment scene from both Darrow and Servor. I do like how the author have made character development for Tatutis, Mustang and Darrow. I would recommend continuing reading this series, I spent every day reading it and wanting not to put it down.

My top 3 moment are:

1. Darrow fitting with  cassius, like the reveal of how Darrow knew how to fight. The sovereign making political decision mistake which led to spark for civil war created by Darrow.

2.Darrow showing mustang whom he is, while visiting his mom for the first time again. This whole scene felt like huge stupid part on for him, at the same time how to remind you whom he is as person. I could have sworn that Ragnar would have killed Mustang but instead just show more emotion of humanity.

3. The betrayal scene, thinking everything was perhaps good but keep tense in the air. Really like how munch foreshadowing of Roque will betrayed Darrow, like not keep him close or multiple time you see him only concern for gold
