Another reviewer described this as a "French Jane Eyre," but I wouldn't agree with that; both protagonists are orphans who defied cultural norms to end up with rich love interests at the end, but to me, that was where the similarities ended.

Ernestine was a great deal more passionate than Jane - it felt like every other page, we saw Ernestine in a fit of tears for some reason or another. If I were to compare the two stories, I'd say Jane's is much sadder: she doesn't have as many friends as Ernestine, and so her pain must have been all the more intense when she was parted with.

Anywho, I could keep going, but that isn't the point. This was a short and sweet tale of two lovers who are lucky enough where all of the pieces fall neatly into place at the end. For the time that it was written, it nearly seems a fairy tale. This was soft and dulcet enough to enjoy for a few hours, but viewed by a modern day reader, it almost seems forgettable.

Still, I think teenage me would probably have liked this just as much as I loved angsty shoujo manga. I'd recommend it to younger readers who like light romance.
