As we get further into the series, I am struck by how both the romance and non-romance plots are done a disservice by the short length. Especially with this many PoV characters (we get chapters from each of the members of the polycule), there's just not enough page count to flesh them out and have so much going on externally. I had to refer back to the headers to see who's PoV we were in multiple times, because there was so little difference between two of the characters that I couldn't tell them apart at all.

As far as the non-romance plot is concerned, I was confused more than once about the circumstances because we get so little information, but then again it's wrapped up super quickly and we get the hook for the next book and a little more information about the overarching plot.

Newman and Thayer expanded more upon the magic system, mitigating some of the gender essentialist and transphobic aspects that existed in the first books. They also introduced a character on the ace spectrum, which brings me to my biggest problem with this book. Three books in, there is *one* asexual character....and they fridged him. He exists for no other reason than to die and further Poppy's emotional journey. Between that and my meh feelings about the rest of the upcoming pairings, I doubt I'll continue with the series.
