I’ll be honest I am NOT a historical fiction girlie, but this book was chosen for bookclub. I really did end up liking this book a lot (I listened to the audiobook and the narrators were incredible.) It’s definitely full of tragedy but it’s a beautiful story that’s worth a read (or listen).

An entertaining book with some flaws

The book captured and held my attention, but it contained flaws and fell into some tropes regarding slavery and relationships between white landowners and other whites. There was of course the benevolent master who owned the plantation and later a benevolent overseer who contrasted with the evil son of the plantation owner and overseer. Also, the use of the term servant v slave was inappropriate.

Very detailed. A little slow from time to time, but overall a good read.

I think this was a book that will stay with me for a long time. It was slow going at first and the subject matter often kept me up at night - maybe not the best night time reading because it's a book you can't help but dwell on. I became very attached to the characters after awhile which made the second half of the book fly in comparison to the first, as I became more and more concerned about how it would all end. Fascinating.

I am very stingy with 5 star reviews. This book however earned all 5 and then some. This book is incredibly well written and the stories with in the story are told so well. The small glimpse into what slavery was like will forever inbeded. A historical fiction that is a must read.

Never before I have loved 90% of the characters in a book! I felt so invested in each and every one! Super engaging read.
