My second reading, this time as an audiobook. Strangely, I had little to no recollection of the plot after the first chapter, the original short story, and that only the main event. So it was like reading it for the first time again.
I love the intimate nature of the book and the glimpses of a post-apocalyptic world influenced by off-worlders and some high-tech. It was an interesting approach. The main plot, which was not always clear (lose a Dreamsnake, work to get a new one and figure out how to get more), took the Healer, Snake, on horseback from small, isolated community to small, isolated community. The way each community had developed was interesting and we are shown her (and others’) growth among strangers in a very compelling way.
I really enjoyed revisiting this book and have no doubt in another 15 years I’ll be able to experience it anew again!

i love the concept + imagery of this book S O M U C H but the writing itself continuously falls short of actually making this a good read - i feel like this book works incredibly well as a script + interrogation of empathy and skill in sci-fi + genre-bending; but i have such an integral squabble with mcintyre's style of writing. i felt this way about 'the moon and the sun' + 'superluminal' too. imo perhaps superluminal came the closest to being some of her best work. this book is so theoretically sound + the twists and the way mcintyre leaves some character questions open ended is so wonderful but the writing is so irksome and the use of this archaic linguistic format of 'thee' and 'thou' grates on my bones so hard. i was going to write my master's dissertation on this but simply could not do it even tho i love the story and her exploration of aliens and others, non-human x human actors, agency, and gender so much because i just couldn't abide by the writing RIP.
