I can see how this would and would not have been easy to adapt to a movie, especially with how dark the story gets from the 3rd act to the end. But it was very good. It shows how far someone will go for love of their country, their family, and the person they're infatuated with. Even if that infatuation will lead to their harm or detriment.
It’s difficult to read when you really never like the main character. Alexa read this one while I drove and maybe having a voice discussing certain events made it worse.
He was weak and I thought just made crazy decisions - not ones that made the book unbelievable, but bizarre. He has no real empathy, and views everything through a “poor me” lens.
Oh, the movie is very different, so you may want to check out this version too!

Qué importante es saber acabar a tiempo una historia! Llegué a este libro a raíz de ver Jojo Rabbit. Y, aunque intento no hacerme demasiadas expectativas, la verdad es que esperaba más de este libro. Pero el problema de esta novela no es lo que yo esperase o no. Ni tampoco que la película sea clarisimamente superior. Su problema es que es una mala novela en muchos momentos. Tiene una primera parte bastante potente, donde se hacen reflexiones psicológicas muy chulas y que la historia avanza a grandes pasos. Su problema viene después, cuando te acercas al Ecuador del libro y te das cuenta que cada página parece que redunda una y otra vez en los mismos temas sin tener clara que dirección quiere tomar. Además de esto el protagonista es absolutamente insufrible y con actitudes que darían para otro comentario, pero me abstendre de ello por no hacer spoilers. En fin, yo no lo recomiendo. Una pena.
PD: la peli es más que recomendable. Id a verla independientemente de lo que os haya parecido esta reseña o esta novela, si la habéis decidido leer.

Me encanta un buen libro sobre la Segunda Guerra Mundial, pero este no.
Simplemente no.
Es IMPOSIBLE sentir empatía por un Nazi, aunque sea sólo un niño. Y la obsesión que desarrolla por Elsa, prácticamente obligándola a sufrir sólo porque él así lo quiere... no.
Esperaba quizás un cambio de corazón, de mente, de algo.
Pero Johannes se mantiene igual que al comienzo del libro, cerrado, egoísta y -con todo respeto- quién supera la muerte de su madre en menos de una semana?
Respuesta: Un Nazi obsesionado con una judía escondida en su casa.
Fin.
Aún no veo la película (Jojo Rabbit) pero tengo esperanzas de que sea mejor.

Great book I read after seeing Jo Jo Rabbit. I really think the movie did the right thing, ending at about halfway through the book. The second half is almost a different story, and really changes things, and is incredibly troubling and thought provoking.
