Trent is a deeply unlikeable character, and I never got the chance to truly care for him, but I cared about Rita and Milo, and the themes of toxic masculinity and the insidious nature of capitalist chauvinism is captured brilliantly in this novel. Also, there are phenomenal moments of body horror, especially with homeware appliances and power tools.
Graphic: Blood, Bullying, Domestic abuse, Gaslighting, Grief, Physical abuse, Sexism, Toxic relationship, Animal cruelty, Child abuse, Cursing, Medical trauma, Schizophrenia/Psychosis , Animal death, Gore, Body horror, Death, Emotional abuse, Injury/Injury detail, Medical content, Mental illness, Misogyny, Violence, Body shaming, and Death of parent
Moderate: Confinement, Sexual content, Torture, Abandonment, Death of parent, Fire/Fire injury, Sexual violence, Suicidal thoughts, Ableism, Racial slurs, Pregnancy, and Racism
Minor: Alcohol, Vomit, and Xenophobia
Be aware that this novel deals with toxic masculinity, ritual cults and sacrifices, child as easy targets for eldritch abominations, violence with tools and appliances, emasculation, workplace violence, trauma from the destruction of a sibling’s mental capacities, and the dissolution of the nuclear family.
