A lovely ending to Bean's side of the story. I have a few complaints here and there, but overall, I'm so glad I read it. It hits hard, and demonstrates how crap of a dad Bean inevitably is most of the time.

This is a short novel; only about half of a standard OSC novel so was a pretty quick read. It centers around Bean and his three children, all of whom share the same genetic defect that he has, an inability to stop growing in size, thus rendering the body too large for the organs to support and thus dooming them to early deaths. I found the first 3rd of the book very hard to get through as it focuses on the children who are whiny geniuses. I feel it's probably very accurate in the way 6 year old geniuses would behave...but they're still whiny. Then the plot picks up and the story ends in a touching, yet satisfying way. I found the author's afterword very interesting, noting that OSC wrote this story after his own stroke in early January last year. So lots of reflecting here on what's really important in life. So for me, what started out as a whiny (rating of 2) ends up with a great ending and message (Rating 5), giving it an overall 4. Definitely for Enderverse completists but perhaps not for everybody.

My lickle legumes, I’ll be honest I love bean too much to like this book as much as the rest because even tho his kids are all cool I just miss reading from only bean’s perspective. I enjoyed the book a lot more than I thought and even tho it made me sad (which is stupid because I knew it was gonna happen) I loved beans ending.

It could have made me laugh. It could have destroyed me emotionally. It could have been a fun little interlude in the Enderverse saga.
It was dull, flat, and artless.

I didn't think I was enjoying this book, and it seemed a bit lack luster, but toward to the end the shift began to focus and I ended up enjoying it more.

A perfect conclusion to the Shadow Series (Except there is still one more... heehee). Read this on a cruise ship and couldn't stop a few tears coming out at the end.

seemed like a "short" story but did not disappoint.
