I'm from this area, so I felt like I needed to read it and although it was interesting reading about the small town life of the Northwest Iowa region, I thought it was a pretty boring book. And, I had issues with the way it was written. It was part Dewey's story, part hers and it flip-flopped between the two.
I thought this book looked awfully sentimental, but the subject matter was hard to resist, since I like orange boy cats and libraries. The book isn't just cutesy stories about a cat, though, but rather a portrait of a Middle America town that's going through tough times, and a library director who is going through her own tough times when someone drops a kitten through the book return chute at the library. The cat, Dewey, goes on to be a big part of the library and the the entire town. I enjoyed the book a lot more than I expected to and recommend it to cat lovers, especially.
Super fast read that I didn't want to put down... and I'll admit it, I got a bit teary eyed at the end.
Sweet little book about Dewey, the world's favorite library cat, but also about small Midwestern town culture, the farming crises that have hit Iowa over the years, progress vs tradition, and the author's own life.
I absolutely LOVED this book. Oh, Dewey is the cutest. I can only imagine how much fun it was to have him around... I finished this book in just a few hours, that's how good it was. Highly recommended!!!
I'm very much a cat person and loved Dewey's story. My only critique of the book is that I would have liked more of Dewey and a little less of the author's autobiography that didn't relate to Dewey. Over all though I enjoyed the book.

this would get a lot less stars if it weren't about a cat, an adorable, fluffy orange cat. i'm sorry, i'm a sucker. i'm not so sure he touched the world, but he was fucking adorable. the writing is not so gripping, but when i got to the inevitable "end," i bawled my eyes out. jesus. cute cat.
This book made me cry so much it wasn't even funny. And i wear glasses. So trying to read a book between crying is a real challenge. I haven't had this much trouble reading a book due to that since What Was Good About Today.
So, anyway, I loved all the stories about Dewey, although I believe the author must have had rose-colored glasses regarding him as no cat is that perfect, consistent and fluent in English to always know exactly what you want him to do. I found the history of the town very interesting and heart-felt And the author's personal tragedies were heart-breaking.
However, I did not like it when she talked about her relationship with her daughter. I'm not sure if it was just me, the way she was wriitng, or reality, but I did not like the attitude from her I was detecting, and it was the one low-spot of the book, IMO.
