Volim mačke, volim knjige i biblioteke i ovo je jedna sasvim ok knjiga, ako ne očekujete previše. Možda mi je malo premalo bilo priče o mačoru u odnosu na ostalo, ali dobro, to sam samo ja.

hard pass

Sweet book about a cat that brought distinction to a small Iowa library.

Given all of the press that this book has received I thought it would be better than it is. Plus, I am a cat owner, a reader of biographies, a book lover, and an Iowan. It's fine, but not really as extraordinary as the author thinks it is. I suspect that she had never had a cat before, because some of the things that she finds so remarkable about Dewey are pretty standard repertoire for an even slightly clever cat.

Heartwarming story with some bittersweet endings. The book isn't just about the cat, or the library, it's also the librarian who principally cared for the cat. She has had a tough life in a succession of small towns, and she ends up feeling a kinship with this abandoned cat. Definitely a great account of the town that loved the cat too. Not alot of deep meaning, but that is not the book's intention.

I loved this book. Made me wish my library had a library cat. And, much like Marley and me, I cried when the old Dewey passed away. The book's message is clear - animals touch our lives and make them better. I know my cat Gus does.

Cute story. My favorite passage: "Find your place. Be happy with what you have.Treat everyone well. Live a good life. It isn't about material things; it's about love. And you can never anticipate love."

Cute story. Very poorly written.

I borrowed this as an audio book from our library for something short & mindless to listen to while cleaning the house. When the author stopped generalizing and actually told specific stories about the cat, it was cute, but that wasn't most of the book. Besides the repeated generalizations about the town, it was mostly generalizations of how wonderful Dewey was about making friends or changing lives. I love pets and have no doubt that the town grew very attached to this cat, but I was surprised that a librarian, who presumably reads books, would fall into such an amateur writing trap of "telling" rather than "showing." I also--possibly because of the title--expected most of the book to be about the cat. It does start out that way, but then it becomes all about the author. ALL about the author. So not so much cute cat stories, but that author's life, daughter, double mastectomy, etc. It's only a 4-disc audio book, but after one and a half discs, I've had enough.
