The 2 stars is really only for the cover, and the general idea of the book. Otherwise it would have been 1.

I love cats. I love books. Put a gorgeous photo of a beautiful/adorable cat on the cover with books? I'm sold. I was in love with this book as soon as I picked it up.

Then I got bogged down in a disjointed tale of a personal woman's trouble, Iowa history, and Spencer's struggles. Interspersed were anecdotes of Dewey. And prevailing through the whole book was a sense of an inferiority complex covered with a false bravado/pride.

I can believe that Dewey was a fantastic cat who made a difference (it was reiterated many many times in the book). But the writing style was just not good. Not charming. Not interesting. Very disappointing.

My formerly local library has (had? Not sure if he's still there...) a library cat, a lovely long haired thing that I would always try to find and say hello to. I wish my currently local library had a cat... Dewey sounds like he was a lovely animal. I really enjoyed the bit of this book that were about Dewey (even if the author overly anthropomorphises him), but there was a lot about Iowa (some was needed for context, I will admit that, but there was too much), and quite a bit about the author's own family (not all of which was needed for context I don't think), which detracted from the book a bit, for me anyway. The Dewey parts will warm the heart of any animal lover, but the small-town-heartland-of-America bit felt very...small-town-heartland-of-America! 3 stars because I love cats and would have liked to have met Dewey!

A VERY SWEET BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This book was overly sentimental, a little bit cheesy, somewhat poorly written, and contained a bit TMI re. the author's private tragedies, but it is nevertheless a charming story for anyone who loves cats and libraries. I read it on vacation and it was perfect for that.

A sweet tale of a very special library cat. 3 1/2 stars for me as there was a lot not about the cat and I wanted more cat, though I do understand why. You get a real sense of the town and it’s people and how much this cat did for all who met him, but the book is meant to be about the cat not the author

Super cute and reminded me of my favorite cat, Bailey, who was also a fluffy orange cat. 😻

A sweet, sweet kitty, some wonderful people, and a library. Solid book. What’s not to like? Love Dewey and his friends!

After reading this piece of American literature, I believe every library should have a cat.

Libraries are first and foremost little pieces of magic - holding worlds and dimensions described and read by millions. Libraries are already so magical - why not add a cat to the mix to take to the next level? There are 125 cats in the Library Cat Association and yet Dewey is the one whose story made it all the way to Japan - you can feel the love around this guy. I think its the fact that he helped create such a sense of community - so many humans struggle to create that and here was this cat that helped foster it to new levels.

“A great library doesn't have to be big or beautiful. It doesn't have to have the best facilities or the most efficient staff or the most users. A great library provides. It is enmeshed in the life of a community in a way that makes it indispensable. A great library is one nobody notices because it is always there, and always has what people need.”

There were a few comments about - why is this the story of a woman and her cat? And there - I agree. It is a story of a woman & her cat - all of our animal bonds are special and so admittedly, none are. It's kinda the beauty and the normalcy of it at the same time.

When Vicki started diving into the story of not only the town of Spencer but her own life, I had a gut reaction of why are we doing this? I thought I was reading a book about a cat that hung out in the library. But I agree with what Vicki said in the epilogue of the 2 year edition - it was vital to the telling of the story.

This story was everything I needed at the time I read it - a heart-warming tale of how a cat first revolutionized a library and a small American town. There are so many cute videos and memories from the cat and you can tell how much love this cat brought to the world.
