maybe more of a 3.5

as most short story collections i've read this is a bit of a mixed bag but overall a worthwhile read. neil gaiman is very good at vibes especially in his shorter writing, i felt like all the stories in this collection achieved what they were trying to do quite well, even if what they were trying to do wasn't really for me.
despite the dark subject matter of many of these stories there's still a feeling of whimsy. definitely felt like this made sense as a collection.

stories i quite liked:

The Sea Change
Murder Mysteries
Fifteen Painted Cards from a Vampire Tarot
Bay Wolf
We Can Get Them For You Wholesale

not my favourite of gaiman's collections, but as with all things by this author, still worth reading and very well written. this is just me not connecting to the stories as much as i have with others. i think it's probably one of his darkest anthologies, and my favourite story was 'snow, glass, apples'.

Short stories are without a doubt the best thing that Gaiman does. This is the book that I put in time out in a corner. This is the book that had me say "holy shit" a million times and this book is the reason why, if I ever meet Gaiman, I'll tell him that I usually want to throw his books out of the window, in a good way.

Seriously. Any of his short stories anthology. Buy them.

These stories kind of border on being creepy - traditional children's tales with a twist. There were some really good stories here, and some really bad ones. Out of 35 stories I really liked 5 of them; 10 or so were okay, others were not at all interesting. That said, the few that are good makes it worth reading, in my opinion.

Here are some of my favorites from the book: "The Wedding Present", "Snow, Glass, Apples", "Nicholas Was..", "The Price", "The GoldFish Pool and other stories", "Changes".

I liked some of these stories. Some were absurd, others dark, others surprising. But I just wasn’t clicking with the writing style so am moving on
