He is just such a fantastic and inventive storyteller. His stories are so varied ans so unique. Even his retellings are amazing! (I’m looking at you, “Snow, Glass, Apples.”)

A few of these were a little slower than I normally expect from him, but then again this was published in the 90’s, and I thought I had read this in the past. I did skip some of the prose formatted ones, but overall, a wonderful collection of his.

Coming in the mail today.

I'm only a third of the way through this but already love it for two moments of utter, twisted delight that appeal to that side of my personality; The 102 perfect words of 'Nicholas Was...', astounding that so few words can provide such atmosphere and so many possibilities with the smallest twist of an image; and the warped but flawless description of first love in 'Troll Bridge': 'I saw her chewing gum, when I was thirteen, and I fell for her like a suicide from a bridge'. Short stories, when written as well as this, are completely bewitching.

This is a great collection. I enjoyed most of it. It really shows Gaiman's creative and disturbing mind. I like how he retold some classic stories in his own style like Beowulf (Bay Wolf), Snow White (Snow, Glass, Apples), and the Angels of heaven (Murder Mysteries).

Here are my top 3 favorite.

My never-ending love affair with the works of Neil Gaiman continues. This was a nice break from reading big, epic novels. A collection of short stories can sometimes be exactly what you need when you need to break up some mentally draining monotony. There was a higher proportion of sex in this collection than I was expecting, but this is understandable due to the large number of stories included in the book.

It was intriguing to get an insight into the evolution of Gaiman's work. While not ordered chronologically, the introduction contains small introductions to each short story, explaining when and why they were written, so an idea of progression is slowly unveiled.

All in all, a fantastic collection of widely varied, fantasy/supernatural/horror/erotic fiction.

I love Neil's novels, but can't grasp a lot of his short stories, thus this was a wild mix of really great stories and such that left me wondering what I am listening to at all.
