"If love is a yearning to be like (even to become) the beloved, then hatred, it must be said, can be engendered by the same ambition, when it cannot be fulfilled."

The book was difficult to understand, so I am not sure how accurate my review is.

One of the most difficult books I've actually managed to make it through, probably only second to Finnegan's Wake (which unsurprisingly is alluded to). Very dense, metaphorical and lyrical descriptions of almost everything such that every line packs a lot of meaning but it also means it becomes overwhelming. Honestly my favourite segments are the various versions/hallucinations of popular biblical stories and obviously the controversial city of Jahilia as depicted here. Everything else kind of felt drawn out way too much.

"The arrival of a fully developed devil, a horned goat-man, was, in the light of the foregoing, something very like the last, or at any rate the penultimate, straw."
