Nora Ephron té l'art de la paraula i l'art de l'escriptura.
D'una anècdota treu una història que aconsegueix fer-te riure de principi a fi. A més a més, aconsegueix que fer que escriure sembli fàcil.
Espectacular.

Heartbreaking but so witty. I loved the way she wrote dialogue and told stories, i felt like I was watching one of her movies in the best way. My only issue was just that I felt the pacing was a little off in the end - where it wouldn’t have been if it was a screenplay.

I have been a long-time fan of everything that Nora Ephron creates (books, blogs, movies) and am reading my way through the compilation of her work, The Most of Nora Ephron. As I read her words, I can hear her voice in my head -- a rare occurrence which happens with only a couple of authors (Anthony Bourdain being another one). This is the fictionalized novella of the breakup of her marriage to Carl Bernstein. Somehow she makes it laugh-out-loud hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time. Because the main character is a food writer, she intersperses humorous recipes which are so vague that the reader wonders how they would ever turn out edible. The book reads more like a monologue than a novel, but still...it's a Nora Ephron monologue. Oh, Nora, we miss you so!

I'm not much of a Nora Ephron fan--if you want to spare yourself a lengthy rant, simply never mention You've Got Mail around me--but this was the one book of hers my mother always said she liked. Also, recently, a coworker who I adored passed away, and this was one of his favorites, too, so I decided to read it.

I love my mom and cherish the memory of that coworker. This book was okay.

Ephron's voice is energetic and funny, but boy, can you see her sweat for it. She's tap dancing and wildly waving her arms for every laugh. This takes an interesting turn for the self-aware and the poignant at the end, but for the most part, it's exhausting--and this is far too short a book to be so exhausting.

Also, pretty much any reference to race or queerness has not dated well. Though it is hilarious how much of this book the main character spends knocking back drinks while pregnant. I guess that's just how they do in...1983? Wait, this was published in 1983? I was going to guess late '70s, generously. Oh Jesus. I was born in 1984. Um. Thanks for not drinking when you were pregnant with me, Mom!

Which does bring me back around to another odd thing: throughout this book, the narrator brags about her recipe for vinaigrette before, on the penultimate page, it is revealed.

Turns out it's my mom's vinaigrette recipe.

It is a really good recipe for vinaigrette. So there's that.

Anyway. Two or so stars for the book. One bonus star for the vinaigrette.

An enjoyable, quick read. Nora Ephron writes female characters so well.
