Focuses on a small diverse family:
- A Jewish husband
- A paralyzed mom who uses a wheelchair
- Baby Charlie (~1 yr old)
Graphic: Ableism, Body horror, Mental illness, Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Child death, Death, Medical trauma, Classism
Minor: Child abuse, Homophobia, Racism, Sexism, Transphobia, Xenophobia, Blood, Antisemitism
There's only 1 side character that hates all minorities, so his shitty takes are quick to get through. Heavy focus on postpartum depression & physical injuries from giving birth so I'd skip if those trigger you.

I hadn’t heard of this book but I had heard of other Nat Cassidy books. They hadn’t peaked my interest until I saw that he was going to be a featured author at DragonCon 2025. I’ve always enjoyed the author panels, even with authors I hadn’t heard of. I jumped on the chance to buy one of his books and maybe read it before the convention.
That had been my plan, I even brought them all the way down to Georgia but in the end I didn’t have time to read it. I had a great time at his featured panel, added a lot more books to my TBR.
I’m not usually a seeker of family based books, I’m not opposed to them but I don’t actively go out of my way to find stories like that. I come from a small family myself and I currently have no children, just a partner. Maybe that makes reading horrific family stories easier to digest for me.
I really enjoyed Nestlings, it may become a top favorite. I always enjoy a “haunted house” setting and I love that the monsters were gargoyles. That’s so different, at least from what I’ve read!
The book was very easy to follow along and I enjoyed spooky scenarios and settings. I love an ooey gooey monster. Again this may more devastating for parents to read.

Unfortunately even the audiobook couldn’t make this more interesting. Why so boring??? Why not scary??? Insufferable characters, pass!

Freaking loved this. Unique concepts are my jam, and I like that this didn’t end the way I wanted to and ALSO didn’t end the way I expected it to. I was rooting for the protagonist the entire time, even when it put her against her family. She was intensely likable despite her flaws but she had some serious drive. Very fun read
