This was honestly one of the best horror books I’ve picked up in a while. It creeped me out, grossed me out, and also made me think. I loved how the supernatural elements were balanced with the characters just trying to get through everyday life, dealing with both the big tragedies and the small, painful moments.

The only reason it’s not a full 5 stars for me is that some of the author’s commentary felt a bit out of place. It pulled me out of the story, and it was obvious at times that too much of his personal life slipped in. After reading the afterword, I get why, but still think it could have been worked into the story in a less obvious way.

Still, highly recommended if you like horror that’s both unsettling and thoughtful.

I didn’t enjoy this book as much as Nat Cassidy’s other works but the prose is so well-written, I found it hard to put down! If you enjoyed Mary or When the Wolf Comes Home, you will enjoy this one.
