I’ve spent so long being afraid of love, because the last time I was in love, the man I loved only loved one part of me, but not all of me, and I thought love meant having to sacrifice a part of yourself. But then I was with you, and you loved every part of me, even the parts I don’t like. And that scared me more, because I thought there must be some trick and that I couldn’t let myself believe it or I’d fall into the trap. But finally I realized it wasn’t a trap.

I bought and read this book months ago because I love Jasmine Guillory's books, but this one wasn't my favorite. It was mostly good, and there were parts I really liked, but what stands out most in my head is the scene where (slight spoiler ahead) Carlos tells Nik he loves her, she freaks out because she's in dire need of some therapy to work out her issues, and then--what drove me nuts--she uses the word "care" in the way that men use that word, and he responds to her use of the word in the way that women respond to it, which is to say, Not Well. I'm all in favor of gender-flipping things usually, but that part had me arguing with the book out loud, and months later that is what I remember most. I may need to re-read the book to remind myself of the rest of the story.

For readers' advisors: some steamy sex scenes and a fair amount of swearing. One person (who deserves it!) gets punched. Two secondary female characters meet & begin falling in love. Trigger warning: discussion of domestic abuse, specifically emotional abuse.

I really enjoyed the meet-cute of Nik being proposed to on a jumbotron by a guy she has only been dating for a short time. When she says no, he storms out leaving her with no ride home. Carlos steps in with his sister to help her, before the cameras turn it into a spectacle.

While Nik isn't ready to date after the failed proposal she does start a casual hook-up with Carlos. However they can't help but catch feelings.

At times it had some funny moments but sometimes the writing was a little off.

i absolutely loved this book. jasmine guillory has such a fun writing style and the banter between nik and carlos was just so good! i fell in love with this world and these characters their friends and family reminded me so much of my own. it was funny and light but also had a serious side. the first chapter i found strangely funny, and the ending was so fitting. confessing her love for carlos over a “jumbotron” was a funny ode to the beginning where they first met and i thought it was a great detail. i can’t wait to re read this book in the future and i know ill fall more in love with it.

This was a fun, light read that… made me hungry! Haha- but seriously, the author describes food & eating so much, I wanted a giant plate of risotto, enchiladas, and street tacos!

I loved the diversity of characters in this one- and I really loved the friendship Nik has with her two best friends. Lots of great side plots & drama, and I was really rooting for the love story between Nik & Carlos ♥️

I gave it three stars as it wasn’t a “can’t put down” kind of book- but I did enjoy it overall.
