This was a little different than I expected. Rather than just a collection of stories, the authors reference or briefly retell folklore and tales, with an emphasis on the way stories from around the world differ or are similar. There is an extensive bibliography in the back. There were a few random times where there's "editorializing" by the authors that felt out of place. It is a beautiful book with the woodcut stylized illustrations.

Closer to an encyclopedia than a collection of stories. Dry one or two paragraph tellings of a handful of myths, an entire page dedicated to spoiling Angela Carter short stories, and an overall lack of purpose leaves me scratching my head as to why it's got such good reviews.
No where near as good as Mythos by Stephen Fry or Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman.

Care has been taking in the choosing of stories and the way they are portrayed, and the accompanying art is wonderful. However, I believe this book could have done with a stricter editor, there is a /lot/ of repetition, both of information and in phrases used throughout. I also found the writing style not particularly engaging.
