Fools Rush in by Kristan Higgins

Millie has spent most of her life obsessing about Joe Carpenter. She returns to her home town as a doctor and immediately tries to make herself over to win his attention. This is truly a case of be careful what you ask for. The relationship with Joe is shallow and generally unfulfilling. In the background is Millie's ex brother in law, Sam. Sam has been a staunch supporter through thick and thin. Toss in a strained relationship with her sister for a bittersweet story. 3.5 stars

Not my favorite of Higgins's books, it was still cute and an easy read. The first half really dragged for me.

UPDATE 12/7/17
So, initially I was going to let you guys wait and watch my Throwback series video review but I want my thoughts to be available to everyone. After Kristan's shit show of a fat-shaming storm on Twitter today I decided you should know the triggers in this crapfest.

Our MC is a doctor, a legit medical doctor, who loses weight, restricts her eating, and then binge eats in order to get "sexy" for the guy she's been crushing on since high school. That's it. That's pretty much what this book is about. Somebody who obsessively works out, lies, and plots to get her "crush" to like her...as an adult woman. It's problematic at best and while the girl "learns her lesson" about the bad boy, she does so in such unhealthy ways.

Also in this book is single shaming her friend and single mother into NEEDING to be in a relationship. Cause this chick is such an expert on relationships while she dates the guy she's stalked for years.

I just can't with this woman's writing. Yes, I'm heated over the blurb on her latest book, but also just realizing that this is a pattern with this author. She's harmful and problematic and I cannot, and will not, support her work.

Not going to go into detail because this is my TBT read for my booktube channel. I have some thoughts and feelings, though. The vlog won't be one of the longer ones because there just isn't all that much to discuss about a book that's so fluffy. As contemporaries go there are much better out there.

Millie Barnes is this close to finally achieving her perfect life... Rewarding job as a local doctor on Cape Cod? Check. Cute cottage of her very own? Check. Adorable puppy suitable for walks past attractive locals? Check! All she needs is for golden boy and former crush Joe Carpenter to notice her, and Millie will be set. But perfection isn't as easy as it looks—especially when Sam Nickerson, a local policeman, is so distracting. Sure, he needs a friend after being dumped by Millie's fortune-hunting sister, but does she really need to enjoy his company that much? He is definitely not part of her master plan. But maybe it's time for Millie to start a new list...

There's a theme in all of Kristan Higgins books and that's the heroine thinks she wants one thing and finds out she actually wants another. I loved Sam. He was such a great hero in this book and I wanted them to get together so bad that I actually didn't want Joe for her. I liked Joe just fine, but I just didn't like him for Millie. We've all been there and had a Joe but I wanted Sam. The fact that he kept trying to get her to go out was just the icing on the cake and that he popped up everywhere was even better.

Pretty lame. Predictable and not funny. I enjoyed her book about the veterinarian, but the other two I've read have been weak. In fact in both of the books I wasn't crazy about the heroine gets together with her brother-in-law, though in one case it's her late husband's brother and in the other it's her sister's ex-husband. However, I didn't expect it to be great, and I just wanted something unexceptional to help bury the memory of The Book of Tomorrow.

Whilst this wasn't totally unreadable, there were three major ick factors for me.

First was Milly herself - She was a stalker. Sure Higgins tried to make it fun but she was out and out stalking Joe Carpenter.

Second was the fact that the hero of the book used to be Milly's brother in law. I like my brother in law a lot, but I can't imagine ever lusting after him.

Third, said former brother in law turned hero called Milly Kiddo the whole way through the book. Can't stand it when heroes use that kind of language to describe heroines - other no nos include little ones etc.

2.5 or 3 stars - not less only because I kept reading for some reason. I wasn't really rooting for Millie so this one was rather 'meh' for me. She spent sixteen years obsessed with, and stalking, some dude then all of a sudden I'm supposed to root for her when she finally realizes she actually loves this OTHER dude (who is a good guy)? She didn't deserve Sam.

The heroine is about as dumb as a bag of bricks despite being a doctor (she really didn't know basic exercise techniques or how to look them up. REALLY?), creepily stalks an idiot for about 16 years, and has the two most borderline-offensive stereotypical gay friends. On top of that, it takes almost 3/4ths of the book for this dingbat to suddenly (like, almost out of nowhere) decide she's actually been in love with her ex-brother-in-law forever. Say what??
