Very slow for a book with 200 pages. It just didn't work for me.

Quick, easy, adventurous romp. It is always interesting reading stories that are completely straightforward with no subtext or alternate meanings. I imagine a 12 year old boy would love this book.

Beautiful production of an adventurous classic.
The heart of this story is a coming of age tale, as Jack yearns for the sea and is beset by tragedy and adventure when a pirate comes to stay at his family's inn. In the end, Jack is forced to recon with the nature and cruelty of man. Sure, he expected the pirates to be thieves, prioritizing treasure at any cost, but are the "gentlemen" just as bad?

This is just a really great book. A fun adventure written in a classic style with really interesting characters. I wouldn't go so far to say that the book is deep or that the characters are complex, but this is an example of a simple, yet fun writing style that doesn't seem to get written anymore.
