Read this in one sitting. It was absolutely heartbreaking and beautiful and tender and awful and hopeful all at the same time.

So incredibly written and I was an emotional wreck for the following day.

Definitely read the trigger warnings before reading because it deals with a heavy subject matter. What We Broke is a second chance/ marriage in crisis romance and MV hits you with all the feels as usual.

I need a whole novella of Jesse and Leo just happily living their day to day lives without trauma please

This is the first time I've read a book about an established couple going through difficulties. I had high expectations as this is a subject that interests me. And I loved it!

It was a heartbreaking story about Leo and Jesse's relationship falling apart after a traumatic event in their relationship (an event that apparently shouldn't be spoiled in a review, but is revealed in the very first pages of the book, so I don't really understand why it shouldn't be said, but whatever).

Anyway, having been personally affected by this trauma (to a lesser extent), I got a kick out of discovering it. And I felt closer to the characters than I've ever felt to a book. I really felt their desperation.

Marley Valentine has a real gift for making me love books with sad themes, she has incredible writing skills.

I thought the alternating flashback and present format was perfect. The beginning of their story, especially their meeting, is really beautiful. I loved every "then" chapter and had a smile on my face. I thought they were very well placed in the book, with the parallel in the present in the next chapter.

The "now" chapters were obviously darker. We follow their journey through couples therapy, Leo's descent into hell, Jesse trying to stay strong through it all. It was a lot for my little heart, and it's a good thing I knew there would be an HEA or I wouldn't have started this book.

Raine and Zara are perfect! I loved these characters. It almost made me want to read Marley Valentine's FF book about Zara.

I really loved everything about this book.

Some people find Leo's change of heart too sudden, but I wasn't shocked. Where there's a will there's a way and he decided so he chose to change so quickly 😁.

I accompanied my reading by listening to Max Richter's "To the Stars" on repeat, the perfect soundtrack for this sad subject.

Wow what an incredible read. It was raw and heartbreakingly beautiful. It puts you through a rollercoaster of emotions right from the prologue. This is a marriage in crisis/second chance romance that follows Jesse & Leo after a tragic loss (check your TWs). Its very heavy but you get to experience how they navigate their grief and healing journeys. It’s a slow journey back to their HEA but so worth the read.

Its only 272 pages so I was skeptical on how much depth we'd get in a short read but Marley Valentine DELIVERED on this one.

This book was a combination of hurt, anger, loss but most importantly love. Leo and Jesse have been married for years and are now going through a great loss that left such a big void in their lives. The story showed how everyone deals differently with grief, where Leo isolates himself and turns to alcohol, and Jesse takes it upon himself to care for everyone.

Because with great love comes great loss, and with true love comes true pain. And no love is invincible.

I loved how Marley showed us their first meeting and some of the key moments that led their relationship where it is today. They shared a strong and beautiful love and I could feel how deeply they cared for each other even through the heartache.

“You have the most beautiful smile,” he says matter-of-factly before dropping the softest kiss on my lips. “That’s what caught my eye first.”

Raine and Zara were crucial characters in the story. They were part of some very emotional and difficult conversations with both Leo and Jesse, and showed the meaning of family.

This is one of the most heartbreaking and beautiful book I have read

Recommended by @lissyb_20 and I hate her for it because it made me bawl my eyes out.

Seven years of marriage, one teenage daughter, and a stillbirth that sends this couple spiralling. It’s about grief and learning how to move on.

Reasons I Recommend:

1) The love story already happened and the snippets we see of Leo and Jesse trying to find themselves in their grief comes back

2) The distress of wanting to be the one to take care of each other and yet still needing to grieve and rage at the same time and

3) Knowing that broken doesn’t mean it can’t be fixed. Raine and Zara are exactly who they need to help them heal.

Marriage in crisis
Love after loss
TW: Child loss

Leo is lost after the death of his daughter. He’s drowning in grief. He pushes away from Jesse and their other daughter. It was heartbreaking but i felt more for Jesse who was just trying to keep everyone together and afloat. He never was able to grieve his daughter. I was so happy when Leo finally realized he needed to do something with his grief other than push away from his family.
