Edit:
What was I thinking 6 months ago???
———————————————-
I admit that I wouldn’t have kept on reading this book if it wasn’t for :
1. Guy Davenport’s introduction
2. How cool she is
I remember seeing a photo of her re: her Sappho translations and being impressed by how badass she looked.
The strangeness in her writing is a strange kind of strange, I mean ashe is strange in her own way. The only comparison I can think of is Bresson’s films and his completely bizarre experiments with non-actors.
That being said, I didn’t really get what she’s going for (except for the Glass Essay). But go watch her Lecture on the history of skywriting, it’s fantastic!!!

"You remember too much,
my mother said to me recently.
Why hold onto all that? And I said,
Where can I put it down?"

Came for 'The Glass Essay', stayed for 'The Glass Essay' but also for everything else, which is utterly brilliant.
My task is to carry secret burdens for the world. People watch curiously. Yesterday morning at sunrise for example, you could have seen me on the breakwall carrying gauze. I also carry untimely ideas and sins in general or any faulty action that has been lowered together with you into this hour. Trust me. The trotting animal can restore red hearts to red

Bien aimé "The Glass Essay", "The Fall of Rome", "Gender of Sound"
Pour le reste, petit livre qui m'a quand même laissé copieusement le temps de m'ennuyer
Est-ce que je le conseille, non

"The Glass Essay" and "The Gender of Sound" were highlights. I've been texting fragments of the latter to my best friend, which is annoying, probably. But it's just so good! Anne Carson just might inspire me to become a classicist. (No, she won't. But it's nice to think so.)
