While still an enjoyable story full of great characters. It felt a bit more predictable then the first. Maybe because of the limited scene with half of the book taking place on a ship. But otherwise it was another wonderful story with great views from a dragons eyes.

Sad. I was so bored!

These are such a guilty pleasure. This one had some issues with pacing, but I’ve already ordered the next installment so clearly it wasn’t too detrimental.

In this alternate history fantasy, the Napoleonic Wars rage on, but Laurence and Temeraire are facing a different battle. The Chinese Emperor’s brother has come to England demanding to take Temeraire (Chinese name Xiang) home. Laurence and Temeraire embark on the long voyage around Africa through the Indian Ocean to China. Along the way, cultural clashes abound.

The fantasy setting of a cultural conflict between British and Chinese views about dragons provides an interesting backdrop to explore the historical realities of colonialism, racism, slavery, and even gender roles. The difference of perspectives between humans and dragons on a number of topics, such as property, intelligence, loyalty, freedom, and money, also leads to some fascinating, thought-provoking discussions.

Throne of Jade is a solid sequel to His Majesty’s Dragon, and I would recommend the series to readers who enjoy historical fantasy and language reminiscent of Jane Austen. My one wish is that the bond between Yongxing and Lien had been explored more. I am eager to see how Laurence and Temeraire use their newfound knowledge to foment change upon their return to Britain.

Tedious. I hope this is a transition book that sets the stage for something more interesting in the series.
