Overall very cookie cutter plot progression with opportunit  for improvement to tie plot points better.  There was a prophecy, you got that prophecy. This kind of spoiled the storyline  a bit.

I feel like this highlighted a lot of the negative aspects of Viet culture ? Especially the relationships between family, desires for marrying for status, racial comments and superiority complex. I think the messiness and unlikeable characters was probably intentional,  but there wasn't any resolve or redeeming qualities in the end. Also way too many characters, all one dimensional. Everyone was so bitter and holding onto grudges, for older adult women?

On the plus side it was cool to see actual viet words throughout the book. This was definitely in perspective from Vietnamese American

Really 3.5 stars as there were aspects of this book I enjoyed but at the end of the day it didn’t go to the depths that would have made me really love it.

This book is chaos!

This book is HILARIOUS and also so very sweet. It's not often that a book instills such loud and passionate reactions from me as this one has. It took me a while to get into the dramedy that is the lives of the Duong women, but once I did, I really flew through the pages. I saw myself in my poor choices in men and my tumultuous relationship with my own mother and sister. This is a story that rightfully calls me out and pushes me to really cherish my loved ones, to not be blinded and ruled by pride. To make that leap and take the chance for myself, for my family, for love. That it's never too late to grab hold of something beautiful.

What an awesome book, fr. If you could see the annotations I made in this one, and the lovely red flags scattered throughout...
