Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs are at it again in this page-turning mystery thriller. The Empty Chair is Deaver's first Rhyme novel that deviates from the comforts of Manhattan. Sachs and Rhyme find themselves in North Carolina where they are pitted against "The Insect Boy" and a group of rogue moonshiners. However, everything is not as it seems in this small town and the book will keep you guessing until the last few pages.[return][return]I was a bit hesitant at first when I discovered the book was centered around a killer known as "The Insect Boy". I assumed the shark had been jumped and that this would be my last adventure with Lincoln Rhyme. Somehow Deaver made it work. His character building is superb and the end result was well worth my time.

This is the 3rd book of the Lincoln Rhyme series. The fish-out-of-water feeling was well transported, as the NYC-based cops found themselves in the hot-and-humid mosquito-laden swamps of southeast Carolina. The novel was fast paced and came peppered with more twists and turns than a mountain road in the Swiss Alps. However, it's a slightly weaker continuation of the series, as some of the plot twists seemed a little too contrived. It's still a satisfying read for those who either love the series itself or those who are into sherlockian deductions and forensics in general – I for one am falling squarely into both categories.
