From early childhood, I have fond memories of listening to an LP record of Mary Martin's singing as Peter Pan in the eponymous Broadway show. "Never Neverland" and "I'm Flying" were favorites, along with "I Won't Grow Up." These fond memories are what let this slim, prettily illustrated but fragmentary children's picture book hang onto a third star. At 36 pages, this book doesn't really tell much of the story of Peter Pan and doesn't really capture much, beyond the lyrics of two of the Broadway show's songs, of the work of lyricists Carolyn Leigh, Mark Charlap, Betty Comden, and Adolph Green, the latter of whom was Phyllis Newman's husband (she wrote the Introduction to this book). One of the disappointments is that the lyrics are split into bracketing fragments (Neverland part 1, I'm Flying part 1, Neverland part two, I'm Flying, part 2) so, if a child were to listen to the original music, they would not be able to follow along with the printed text, which seems a rather important for a book targeting 4-8 year old children.

This is a very pretty book that was poorly structured.
