Switched at birth but make it a thriller! I listened to the audiobook for this book and I think that made it better. The audiobook was very easy to follow, which is often not the case. The beginning of this book was slow. This was an 11 hour book and I was kinda bored till hour 5. It wasn’t really much of a “twisty” book - which is fine, sometimes twists can really cheapen a book. This was my first fiction audiobook and while I did enjoy it, it wasn’t a must listen.

DID NOT FINISH: 24%

I will come back to this one later. I can't get into it right now. Why force it?

thanks for the ARC. I generally love his books and was wondering if this would be the exception. It was somewhat slow at first, took awhile to get into it. we knew right away there was a very "bad" person and that they were being set up and watched the horror, not actual horror but the horror of a terrible thing happening that you feel powerless to stop despite your best efforts. I liked the resolution and was glad i read it. I would give it a 4.5
tense fast-paced

One of those situations where a male attempts to write women's experience of childbirth/postpartum etc., and fails.

Also: none of these characters were redeemable, and I hated it. What an ugly book.

4.5 stars! This book is infuriatingly amazing. It had me hooked after every single page, i was so consumed by constant emotions of anger, sadness and sometimes happiness that i could not put the book down. The betrayal Pete and Maddie had to face due to Miles and Lucy was insane, they was lied to, accused and lied about in so many ways. Miles had tendencies of a psychopath from the start, his lack of emotion after Lucys birth and in general, his controlling and manipulative behaviour after telling Pete and Maddie that Theo was really his son, his murderous demeanour but even so i was still slightly stunned that lucy admitted to swapping the babies. This book not only was a thriller but also portrayed different relationships such as an emotional and physical abuse between Lucy and Miles in which she was eventually happily able to escape! Such an incredible book and writer!

This was a brilliant domestic suspense novel, I was truly hooked from the very first page. The book is brilliantly written and has enough little twists to keep you guessing how it’s going to go all the way through.

This pulse-pounding story is any parent’s worst nightmare. Pete answers the doorbell one day to two men who inform him that his two-year-old son, Theo, was swapped with another baby at birth and they have DNA evidence to prove it. One of the men, Miles, bears a striking resemblance to Theo, confirming that he is indeed Theo’s biological father. He and his wife have been caring for Pete’s biological and medically-complex child, David. The families strike up an amicable relationship, keeping their children’s best interests at heart; however, deceitful motives are soon revealed and the relationship between the families quickly devolves into one of high tension and antagonism. The story is perfectly paced and absolutely riveting. I found myself compulsively devouring this book even though my nerves were spiraling out of control as I flipped from page to page. In comparison to many books belonging to the thriller/suspense genre, Playing Nice is incredibly realistic, making it all the more unsettling. The characters are complex, flawed, and believable. I guarantee you will fly through this one quickly but the feelings it evokes will stick with you for much longer.

It took me such a long time to finish this audiobook but that’s not because I didn’t like it. I usually listen to audiobooks on my way home from work but thanks to the pandemic I’m “stuck” at home more often than not. I know I can listen at home too but it’s just not the same.

As for the book: A few characters frustrated the hell out of me all the way through but the ending felt like gently tearing the plastic cover off your new phone.

So satisfying.

It was too predictable for me and a little unbelievable.
