Sutherland does such a good job of making each character's POV distinct. Each character thinks completely differently from the others and Sutherland isn't afraid to break traditional writing rules to make that stand out. For example, the use of all caps for parts of Peril's POV. It really emphasizes how loud and intense her mind is, but isn't over-used or distracting from the story. Peril went through some really great character development and a lot of things that had been hinted at in previous books were resolved in this one. It was a good middle book for this arc and did a good job at setting up the rest of the arc.

Agency, morality and learning to think for oneself and make ethical decisions.
Themes of grooming and learning to break from ideologies you’re raise with, alongside the need for patience and second chances.
What does it look like to face a friend? To be a friend? Who do you want to become?
Great to have Peril’s POV as a very simplistic and self-centred voice, for readers to identify with and/or debate.
Bonus points for adorable child-speaking Cliff!
Chameleon who escapes into alternate identities. Peril who dreams of being “cured”, then turns it down. (Queen) Ruby who shows mercy, insists on it, as an adult rather than an idealistic child hero.
Power, and how it can corrupt. Trust. Choices defining you.
Lots of meaty stuff!

I like the direction the author has chosen to go with the new set of characters, but think these books should probably have been considered a spin-off as opposed to a continuation of the original series.
These books are highly addictive, and I look forward to the next installment.
