Lauren Groff is a lyrical writer. But I have never connected with a Lauren Groff character. They remain ciphers and reduce the impact of her prose.

Also the sudden Quarantine! and climate change issues (which were mentioned offhandedly in the book until WHOA diseases) just felt shoehorned since they were coming from insane hippie mouths. The swerve into (admittedly light) environmental peril felt clumsier than it needed to be.

Started out all right, but by the mid-way point I didn't really care what happened to any of the characters.

3 1/2 stars rounded up. Beautiful writing but I thought this novel was a bit lacking in character development. I get this novel centers around Bit but I would really have liked to get to know others better….Abe…Handy…even….maybe especially Helle.

The writing is excellent. Story was a bit slow for me, though.
