After reading Divine Rivals, and then the Elements of Cadence duology, I jumped straight intoRuthless Vows expecting the same delicate prose and vivid world-building I know Ross to harness.
She did not disappoint.
For a romance where the main characters are separated for 90 percent of the story, their relationship is even more tender and intimate than the first book. The yearning is heartbreaking at times, distressing to watch one character fully aware of the distance between her partner, the other painfully unaware of not only their entire relationship, but his entire identity. Yet, this ‘slow-burn’ of sorts makes their love so much more real and inextricable from one another.
My only issue with book one was the pacing and how quick certain things happened while others took the entire book to come to fruition. RV, however, masterfully corrects this, the plot is daring and captivating (well thought out and realistic conflicts in fantasy are sometimes hard to come across) and the new characters we are introduced to are brought to life in the complex and vivid manner I know Ross to be capable of. Characters we are already familiar with are refined and made to be even more loveable (Attie!!! Helena!!! Sarah!!!)
Ross never fails to provide an ending that makes me so so frightened for the fate of everyone. She breaks your heart with no idea of how the story will tie up, and yet she mends every loose end with ease and realism. This particular ending was incredibly sad, the realities and cruelness of war never hidden from the reader. But it makes where the characters are left off so much more bittersweet yet heartwarming. It’s an odd feeling to be left so sad yet so tender and grateful after a read.
Rebecca Ross has proven herself to be one of my favourite authors of all time. This duology is so worth the hype and absolutely perfect!

The book was enjoyable. I was so in Love with book 1 Divine Rivals it was required to read book 2. I’m not a romantic but the relationship building in the first book was missing in this story. I did appreciate that our female lead is strong, smart, brave and fiercely independent .

My only beef with this book is the magic, gods, and goddesses were not explained in much detail. Otherwise a nice wrap up to a good story. No there is no spice in this one either for those wondering
